In Praise of Karen
Follow a link to Chookooloonks, and you'll find yourself immersed in the colorful, wonderful world of Karen Walrond. In a world of sharp-tongued, sarcastic writers, Karen is a breath of fresh air. Always funny, always charming, her entries are full of warmth and genuine affection for her family and friends.
Based in Trinidad, the world of Chookooloonks seems to be touched by magic. An advocate for adoption, Karen's joy and passion for her family have inspired many. She illustrates her entries with her fantastic photos, and lively anecdotes about her life. Her positive outlook and winning style keep her readers clamoring for more.
We asked some of her readers to share the ways that Chookooloonks, moves them:
Dave in Houston was delighted to share his thoughts:
I was initially attracted to Karen's blog because of her mention of Trinidad. I have spent a bit of time there and my EX is from there. Also, at the time, Karen lived in Houston, as do I. Karen has since moved back to Trinidad.
I enjoy her writing. She is very descriptive and what we call "down-home." Meaning honest and forthright and easy to understand. But ... most of all these days, I love the pictures of her most-beautiful-child-on-Earth, Alex.
Menita was happy to give us her take:
What´s not to love? She is funny, centered, strong, adores her child (laughs with her, not at her), tells wonderful stories, takes amazing pictures. And to top it off, she´s a great writer.
I should hate the woman, but there you go - I adore her site.
Mir revealed her catty side as she told us why she can't get enough Chookooloonks:
Really, what can you say about Karen? I mean, once you get over the fact that she's gorgeous and perfect (bitch!), she's quite likeable.
I don't even remember how I came across Chookooloonks, but I found myself going back again and again. At first I thought it was for the adorable pictures of Alex, the baby I fully planned to kidnap and eat, but eventually I realized that the photography was only the beginning.
Karen paints pictures with her words as clearly as she does with her pictures. She's introspective without being self-absorbed. And she's FUNNY, but lots of people are funny. Karen is also JOYFUL. When I read Chookooloonks, I feel that I'm in the presence of a woman on an exciting journey, and I'm thrilled that I've been allowed to tag along.
Diane, a long-time reader, tells us why she continues to come back for more:
More than a year ago, I first found Chookooloonks through a link on the comments at Dooce.com. Pictures on each blog of their daughters playing with lens caps, even the same day, I think. I found a couple other Good Read blogs by clicking names in comments at Chookooloonks. The Internet is such a wonderful invention!
I stick around because Karen has such a good eye for taking photographs, she writes good stories using correct grammar and spelling (nicely expected from a former lawyer), and because she is so optimistic about
adoption and adores her family. One of my dear friends adopted her daughter from an orphanage overseas,
becoming a single, working mother who earns her salary as a college professor.
There's no one straight-up reason I read Chookooloonks, but I'm really glad to be able to have it in my Bookmarks, and have considered ordering from CafePress just because.....
Check back later today to read our interview with the delightful Karen of Chookooloonks!

Chooks is one of my favorite sites. I met Karen through her family; they are just as fun, witty, and rum loving as you imagine. Her Christmas story about Mass and Santa hooked me and I'm so glad this site is giving her some (more) well-deserved kudos!
