What is the first thing you notice when you meet someone?

You’re not from around here, are you?
Lin The very first thing I notice is speech. I can forget hair and eye color pretty quickly, but imprinted on me immediately is the way a person talks…the nuances of her accent, her comfort with words, where she’s from and sometimes where she wishes she were from. I’m a mimic and have been since I was very young; perhaps because I grew up between the US and the UK and wherever I happened to be, I made sure I sounded like everyone else. My accent still moves all over the place. Most days it’s mid-Atlantic, somewhere between there and here, but when I’m chatting with my mother or my husband and there are no Americans around, my accent is pretty English.

The eyes have it:
cmhl It would depend on the venue--- if I have my offspring with me, I will look to see if there is a disapproving grimace in response to my lack of control over said offspring. If it is in a work setting, I will look to see if there is direct eye contact with my eyes, or if there is a delay in responding during the conversation---- to see if they are formulating the answer they think I want to hear, or if they are speaking off the cuff..
Maryanne Their eyes, if they are unable to look me in the eyes during the introduction, I get uncomfortable.
Eulallia I notice if they meet my eyes when we are introduced.The confidence they show in themselves and ourintroduction really makes an impact on my firstimpression of them.

EverydaySuperGoddess In real life, their shoes. In the blogosphere, whether or not they can make me laugh.

Size Matters:
Sleepless Mama Their height. I'm 4' 11 3/5", so it's kind of hard not to notice when someone is taller than me
Carmen If they have bigger boobs than me.
Lauren Height. I'm a small person, so I'm very sensitive about height.

She’ll smell you coming a mile away. Or maybe not:
Jenijen I have a sensitive nose, so smell is probably first. I don't really know, though.
Their smell.
Jelly Seriously, I have a nose like a bloodhound and I smell people before I even see them. This is more of a burden than a gift. Especially if they eat a lot of garlic. Trust me.

Basically, It’s all about her;
Allison A woman? Whether or not she's thinner than I am. Man? Could he think I'm cute. It's pretty much all about me.
Mazeway When I first meet someone, I'm actually focused on what that person is seeing -- how do I look, will she think I'm cool? Then I jump right to the superficial judgements -- hair, shoes, etc.

Hey, do I know you?

I think someone needs a road trip:
Summer If by "someone" you mean "other relatively self-aware adults," I cannot answer with any kind of authority. The question assumes I actually get out and meet relatively self-aware adults, and that just doesn't happen much here in the land of Crisco, corn, cows, and Camaros (also known as the Meth Belt--woo!). When forced into such awkward situations, I generally notice the eyes, nose, mouth, alive, dead, wounded...just the things everyone notices: just the very basic stuff.

That look:
Buffi Hmmmm. Probably their smile and how comfortable they seem in their own skin. I am drawn to self-confident people (I'm sure we all are) and I think that is something that you can usually tell right from the start.
Holli Whether or not they seem genuinely interested in meeting me, or if they're dismissive and robotic. I love people who can make you feel comfortable with that first "hello." And yes, I realize these are usually the people you need to LOOK OUT FOR!!
Barbex The Skin. I have bad skin and I envy people with healthy skin.
Surcie Their teeth. Especially if they don’t have ‘em.
Mother Goose Mouse Their expression
Mary Tsao If they look happy or unhappy. That way I'll know whether to offer them a Coke or a Jim Beam and Coke.

The first thing I notice is their personality or at least I try to. Being the shy person that I am, I tend to stand back and watch from afar and then make a decision who I will probably be able to get along with and who to stay away from. I have seldom been wrong.

I notice personality first. You can tell if someone's bitchy by the way they greet you when you first meet, and I don't have time for bitchy ones!
