Question 4

What is the most disturbing sound in the world?

Drills:
Jill Miller Zimon The drill over my head right now while I'm on vacation in sunny Florida
Barbex The dentist drill.

Spills:
Lin I’m sure there are many more disturbing sounds than this, but the one that always makes me cringe is when a child (usually a toddler) cracks his head on something, like the corner of the coffee table. Half the time you see it coming, try to get between the kid and the scary object and usually fail.

The sound of silence:
Mary The sound of my voice talking when I realize everybody around me has stopped listening.
Buffi Sudden silence from the boys room upstairs.
Mazeway silence that is followed by "It was an accident, Mommy!"
Carmen silence when all the kids are awake - if it's too quiet, then there is something, usually very very wrong, going on. A close second would be running water - never a good sound in a house with six kids!

Body Noises:
Mir ANYONE VOMITING
Sleepless Mama Gargling. It just CREEPS ME OUT
Jenijen In my world it is harmless words combined in awful ways, like: "MOM I have diareeeeahhhh and I didn't maaaaake it" or "I barfed again in the bed" or "what is this puddle?" You get the idea. Willow's new fondness for screaming really sucks, too.

That voice:
ishouldbeworking my almost ex-husband's voice
Lauren Dr. Laura on just about any subject. After that it would be just about any other conservative right-wing radio personality.
EverydaySuperGoddess To me, sadly, it's Neil Young. While I appreciate his writing talents, I find his singing voice like fingernails on a blackboard

Those tears:
cmhl The sounds that my son made when he had to have stitches when he was three years old, and the anesthesia wasn't sufficient.
Maryanne The sound of a sick or hungry child. Goes right through me
Eulallia In my pre-mommy days I would have said teeth grinding, but now I think the sound of a child crying in distress is just heart-wrenching. It kills me every time I hear it

Denied
Jelly "I'm sorry ma'am. We appear to be out of Three Olives Cherry Vodka. Would you like Seagram's instead?

Beeeeep!
Allison The alarm clock.
Surcie The carbon monoxide alarm in my house. When the batteries need to be changed, it scares the crap out of me.
Holli My alarm clock on workdays. I rarely even have to hear it anymore. I hear the "pre-click" before the beep and fly like a bat out of hell to hit that "off" button. Anything to avoid having that noise infiltrate the silence.
Mother Goose Mouse Thumping bass

A compelling reason to shop online:
Summer The sound of fingernails on catalog pages. It's the worst feeling in the world, too.

Comments

I think that the sounds wild turkeys make are awful. Turkeys don't gobble - they make this cackle and keekee noise. Augghhh, make them stop!!!

Styrofoam rubbing together. That sound makes me want to be violent.

The serious, out of breath scream when you know someone is REALLY hurt...breathe, already, breathe!
