Mommy Bloggers: In Praise of Susie Sunshine

The Mommybloggers are proud to feature Susie Sunshine, from Underpaid kept woman. Susie is a perfect blend of domestic goddess and smart-alec. She is the kind of person you want to be seated next to at a bad play, because she would make you laugh uncontrollably at the most inappropriate times with her side-splitting remarks.

Susie is gifted with a Martha-Stewart like knack for all things crafty, except unlike Martha, you would actually want to stop by her house unannounced, for a glass of wine. Even if your kids were slightly stinky and poorly behaved, and even if you hadn't yet had a chance to shower yourself, and had peanut butter in your hair. I don't think Susie would even notice. Her writing is real, laid back, and screamingly funny. What comes through is a remarkable sense of humor, and love for her family. We just can't say enough wonderful things about her, so we'll go ahead and offer you the comments of some of her readers:

She was a true inspiration to Lucinda:

Susie Sunshine's blog is extra special to me, because she is basically my Dooce. I knew nothing about blogging when I started out, so when I happened across her website, I knew I had struck mommyblogging gold. I have basically acted as Susie Sunshine's token deranged fan for the last year, commenting like mad, attaining VIP status on her site meter, even barfing once in her honor until she finally gave in and agreed to be my friend. Frankly, I believe that for her it was a coin toss between that and calling the FBI.
I'm pretty certain that Susie Sunshine will one day be a household name, seen in shopping malls and on magazine covers and cereal boxes from Topeka to Toronto to Tokyo. And when that happens, I will proudly tell anyone who'll listen, "I stalked her when."

Badger admits she shouldn't like her, but just can't help it:

Susie Sunshine is someone I should hate. For one thing, she is very pretty. (Yes, you are too, Susie! Shut up!) For another, she is the kind of mom who actually BAKES things and makes all those complicated craft projects from the parenting magazines (the ones requiring materials that I've told my kids aren't available in our state)(what? was that wrong?). And she manages to do all this while raising four boys, which is three more than I've proven myself able to handle.
Fortunately she also drinks like a fish and cusses like a sailor, which is what keeps me coming back for more. Well, that and the fact that she makes me laugh until I pee.

As for Susie - well, what CAN I say? She leads me to believe that I could parent an additional boy. She can vividly and engagingly describe a puking virus like no other blogger... and she has incredible Crayola skills. She's the envy of many, the paragon of dozens and writes about neither exercising nor dieting nor sleeping through the night -- all of which have me clicking for updates far more than I care to admit. Susie is a mommyblogger with an intellect and an attitude (who also seems to be thin and attractive, DAMN).

Leah makes reading her blog a priority:

Susie is a great choice for a feature! She was one of the first sites I started reading right around the time I started my own site, and she is one of the few sites I have in my "Priority 1" folder on Bloglines, meaning that I'll drop just about anything else I'm doing to read a new entry. One of the things I consistently enjoy is that she manages to be snarky and loving at the same time. I doubt anyone would accuse her of being sappy, but she's brought me close to tears on a number of occasions just by discussing her adorable family. She has also made me cry with laughter, though. Perhaps you should just be sure to read her site with kleenex readily available... Oh, and if you have a chance to meet her in person, definitely do it. Especially if you feed her margaritas, but she's awesomely fun even without any assistance from liquor.

Jen admires her gifts for multitasking:

Susie is amazing because while we were on the phone last week she managed to strip wet sheets, clean up and comfort a damp child, remake the bed, and chase a couple of joyriders off her street without ever breaking the stream of conversation OR setting down her margarita. That, my friends, takes the same kind of skill Susie employs on her website every day.

Susie Sunshine is not only a brilliant writer whose wit and intelligent sense of humor can make you laugh until you can physically locate your vocal cords, she's also a kind and generous soul who never fails to inspire me. There's a sense of comfortingly feel-good and grace in her writing that I believe is unique. Reading her blog makes motherhood a little like venturing into Disneyland on a rainy day. You know you can make the best out of it or spend the rest of the day complaining. Susie always makes me want to cling on to what's good and great about my life. I truly, absolutely, completely adore this woman.

Angie clearly adores Susie:

Susie Sunshine is fake. Go on. Ask her. She will tell you it is true. She is really Rebecca of Sunnybrook Farm. She is! Ha! Who am I kidding? She is June Cleaver with a margarita. What can I tell you about Susie? I could tell you she is the girl next door; she really is a woman you instantly want to make friends with (-unless you are the PTA president prior to her reign); she greets the world with a not-too-brainy-but-I've-got-the-funny attitude which is so misleading because the woman is Mrs. Brilliant, but you would already know those things.
Let's see ... All of that Bobbi Brown makeup she buys? She doesn't need it. No! She doesn't! She is in her mid thirties, mother of a teenager and three other boys, and she is drop dead gorgeous wearing 1950's era wiggle dresses and aprons for her husband. Need I say more?
O'kay. More ...She wrote the Kotex letter that so many women have taken and posted as their own work. That is a battle that will be fought for years to come. She should change her tag line to read "Home of the Original Kotex Letter".
Or something.
Susie's blog is the first blog I ever read and wished the writer lived in my neighborhood. More importantly wished she lived right next door to me. Immediately I wanted to make friends with this woman who cleaned and tended children and gave household tips and wrote with such comedic light on the every day mundane tasks of being a wife and mother. Then she answered a comment I left by email. Email! This woman I had an innocent crush on sent me an email which was sweet and funny (-again with the funny) and marked the beginning of a lovely friendship.

To put it simply - I love, Susie. She makes being a wife and mother look easy because she isn't afraid to stand back and have a good laugh at herself.

I've learned it's easy to sound good if you know great writers to talk you up. Every one of these bloggers has the ability to make even Tom Cruise socially acceptable.
I'm honored (and a little freaked out) that they joined together and aimed their spotlights on me.
