Animal School

Many of you have probably seen this video before, but even so, it bears watching again.

Don't feel obligated to give that site your email address unless you want to.

As a parent and as a teacher, I have many opinions about the video, and most of you can probably guess correctly what those opinions might be.

I can personally identify with a little bit of each animal, actually. Also, I have very little respect for most administrators. Some, yes. Most, no.

The kids should come first. Period.

Having grown up with parents immersed in education, both on the teaching and administrative end, and choosing education as my life's work, I can identify with the ideas contained in this video. I do disagree with the idea that it is school administrators. The problem is larger. Look to the people who are creating educational policy in your state and country. They are the ones dictating what will occur in schools, what will be taught, how many tests will be taken at what levels to determine the success of your school. Is it any wonder that we have frustrated students and teachers? Wake up and realize that not everyone is the same, not everyone can be evaluated using standardized testing methods, and give our future a chance to show what it can do. Who are today's innovators? The kids who didn't do well in the traditional system, but found a way to work around it. Stop creating drones and encourage creative thinking and methods of teaching and learning.

This almost made me tear up.

I've always done reasonably well in school. I took for granted that it more or less went that way for everybody, until I saw my nephew in distress. The poor little dude was so sad because he wasn't good in school, like his brother. Thank goodness my sister told him that his performance in school wasn't a reflection of who he really was, and that not everybody fits into that environment. She also pointed out and praised him for things that he could do, but that his brother couldn't.
